The Great Dragon, That Old Serpent (The Genesis Series #18)
The first encounter with evil comes in the form of a serpent, and we should expect to find this ensign deeply imbedded in this world’s fallen condition—and we certainly do. GOD SAID, Genesis 3:1-6:
1 Now the serpent was more subtle than any beast of the field which the LORD God had made. And he said unto the woman, Yea, hath God said, Ye shall not eat of every tree of the garden?
2 And the woman said unto the serpent, We may eat of the fruit of the trees of the garden:
3 But of the fruit of the tree which is in the midst of the garden, God hath said, Ye shall not eat of it, neither shall ye touch it, lest ye die.
4 And the serpent said unto the woman, Ye shall not surely die:
5 For God doth know that in the day ye eat thereof, then your eyes shall be opened, and ye shall be as gods, knowing good and evil.
6 And when the woman saw that the tree was good for food, and that it was pleasant to the eyes, and a tree to be desired to make one wise, she took of the fruit thereof, and did eat, and gave also unto her husband with her; and he did eat.
GOD SAID, Revelation 12:7-9:
7 And there was war in heaven: Michael and his angels fought against the dragon; and the dragon fought and his angels,
8 And prevailed not; neither was their place found any more in heaven.
9 And the great dragon was cast out, that old serpent, called the Devil, and Satan, which deceiveth the whole world: he was cast out into the earth, and his angels were cast out with him.
GOD SAID, John 10:1:
Verily, verily, I say unto you, He that entereth not by the door into the sheepfold, but climbeth up some other way, the same is a thief and a robber.
MAN SAID: I don’t want there to be a God. I don’t want His Bible, or His Jesus. And, so what if my group is all bound up with addictions, phobias, anxiety attacks, fears, depressions, hatreds for conservatives, and bitterness? And, yes, of course we lie and cheat and fornicate a lot, but who cares?! We’re just humans, you know.
Now THE RECORD: Welcome to GodSaidManSaid feature 1238 that will once again certify the bonafides of God’s Holy Bible. All of these faith-building features are archived here in text and streaming audio for your edification and to be used as bait by the fishers of men. Every Thursday eve, God willing, they grow by one.
Thank you for visiting. May God’s face shine upon you with Light and Truth.
US President Donald Trump popularized the phrase “fake news,” and it means false information portrayed as truth and spoken with authority repetitively. I am reminded of one of evolution’s champions who warned evolutionists against conducting public debates with creationists. She lamented that the average citizen was not able to understand the “depths” of their “advanced wisdom,” so a public debate wouldn’t fare well for evolutionists. The rank and file simple folk just couldn’t wrap their heads around evolution’s astute and well-reasoned position that all things that exist were a result of blind chance. There was a big bang out of virtually nothing and voila! Here we are! And, oh yes, your second cousin was a banana; your first cousin, a mushroom; and your father was a monkey. If you think your family tree was impressive, be humbled by the tiny hummingbird flitting around your backyard feeder. It evolved from the massive Tyrannosaurus Rex, king of the dinosaurs!
The advocates of unbelief have an entire cadre of fake news publications, sundry media outlets, and the entire host of the world’s academics marching before the public in lockstep, pronouncing the utter foolishness which collapses around their very ears when under even the most elementary scrutiny. The way this group holds power is through censorship. Nearly never will you find the highly credentialed scientists who embrace the truth of the Bible given the chance to dissent. These champions of blasphemy cannot allow a divine foot in the door. God and His Word must be blocked at all costs, for if He enters in, all of their foolish darkness must leap out the window, even as darkness leaps out the window when the light switch is turned on. As one of their own, evolutionist Richard Lewontin, explains:
It is not that the methods and institutions of science somehow compel us to accept a material explanation of the phenomenal world, but, on the contrary, that we are forced by our a priori adherence to material causes to create an apparatus of investigation and a set of concepts that produce material explanations, no matter how counterintuitive, no matter how mystifying to the uninitiated. Moreover, that materialism is absolute, so we cannot allow a Divine Foot in the door. [End of quote]
You have arrived at the GodSaidManSaid “Genesis Series;” this is Part 18. Each of these features begins with the following information from the first feature:
According to a 2006 issue of Discover magazine concerning the deceased Carl Sagan: “Sagan approaches religion like any phenomenon. He isn’t on a quest for life’s meaning, for a comforting philosophy, or even a guide to how we should treat the neighbors. Sagan seeks truth of a demonstrable kind. As a puckish example, he wonders why the book of Genesis didn’t include God-inspired truths…” [End of quote]
I recently reviewed an advertisement from a magazine called Free Inquiry that also has a problem with the God of Creation and the first book of the Bible, called Genesis. Under the heading “Is God Big Enough for the Universe,” Free Inquiry writes:
The authors of Genesis proclaim that God made the heavens and earth in less than a week. This feat must have amazed these Bronze Age authors, even though they thought the heavens extended only so far as the sky above them. Of course, they did not know what stars, planets, or galaxies were. We now know that the universe is so much bigger and so much more complex. [End of quote]
The BORN AGAIN scratch their heads in bewilderment. Did these folks actually read the book of Genesis? I suppose they did, but God’s revelation is only revealed to the humbled hearts of the children of faith. This GodSaidManSaid series will be called “The Genesis Series.” It is our intention to travel through the entire book of Genesis and publish one major God-inspired truth after another. We will be pulling from previous GodSaidManSaid features and adding the latest information as we go.
It is the MO (modus operandi) of the fallen: They must seek another way. John 10:1:
Verily, verily, I say unto you, He that entereth not by the door into the sheepfold, but climbeth up some other way, the same is a thief and a robber.
The fallen must find some other way. This spiritual delusion—for there is no other way—was established in the Garden of Eden in the very beginning of human history. Genesis 3:1-6:
Satan possesses the body of the serpent in the midst of the Garden and engages Eve at the forbidden Tree of the Knowledge of Good and Evil. Satan lies to Eve and she embraces his words over her Creator’s. In an act of unbelief and disobedience, Eve eats the forbidden fruit and offers it to Adam, who also eats it. At this point, all is lost and sin and death beings its reign upon the earth.
The standard bearer of “some other way” is established in the Garden as the serpent, and as we read on in the Word of God, we see it includes his reptilian kin. Revelation 12:1-9:
1 And there appeared a great wonder in heaven; a woman clothed with the sun, and the moon under her feet, and upon her head a crown of twelve stars:
2 And she being with child cried, travailing in birth, and pained to be delivered.
3 And there appeared another wonder in heaven; and behold a great red dragon, having seven heads and ten horns, and seven crowns upon his heads.
4 And his tail drew the third part of the stars of heaven, and did cast them to the earth: and the dragon stood before the woman which was ready to be delivered, for to devour her child as soon as it was born.
5 And she brought forth a man child, who was to rule all nations with a rod of iron: and her child was caught up unto God, and to his throne.
6 And the woman fled into the wilderness, where she hath a place prepared of God, that they should feed her there a thousand two hundred and threescore days.
If the first encounter with evil comes in the form of a serpent, we should expect to find this ensign deeply imbedded in this world’s fallen condition—and we certainly do.
The great dragon, the old serpent, is everywhere. Jesus Christ speaks of Pergamos as “Satan’s seat,” the place where “Satan dwelleth.” The following paragraphs have been lifted from the GodSaidManSaid feature “Pergamos–Where Satan Dwelleth:”
Revelation 12:12-13:
12 And to the angel of the church in Pergamos write; These things saith he which hath the sharp sword with two edges;
13 I know thy works and where thou dwellest, even where Satan''s seat is: and thou holdest fast my name, and hast not denied my faith, even in those days wherein Antipas was my faithful martyr, who was slain among you, where Satan dwelleth.
The following excerpt is from The Bible and Archaeology:
How did serpent worship begin in Pergamos? Some historians trace it to the collapse of the Babylonian Empire, when some Chaldean priests established their religious center in Pergamos. “The defeated Chaldeans fled to Asia Minor, and fixed their central college at Pergamos,” notes historian William Barker in his book Lares and Penates of CiliciaI.
Certainly, the Old Testament identifies Satan’s chief seat of activity as being in ancient Babylon, where the doctrines of its mystery religion “made all the earth drunk” (Jeremiah 51:7). This would make its religious successor, Pergamos, the temporary new “Satan’s seat” of the Babylonian mystery religion.
“That seat,” comments Alexander Hislop, “after the death of Belshazzar (the last Babylonian king), and the expulsion of the Chaldean priesthood from Babylon by the Medo-Persian kings, was at Pergamos, where afterwards was one of the seven churches of Asia. There, in consequence, for many centuries was “Satan’s Seat.”
“There, under favor of the deified kings of Pergamos, was his favorite abode and was the worship of Asklepios, under the form of the serpent…Pergamos itself became part and parcel of the Roman empire, when Attalus III, the last of its kings, at his death, left by will all of his dominions to the Roman people in 133 BC.”
In this way, the Roman emperors had become the heirs of “Satan’s seat” during John’s day. Later, when the Roman Empire collapsed, its successor, the Holy Roman Empire, would inherit the role. It is noteworthy that Revelation 17:4-5, 18 reveals that in the end time, a powerful religious system from the ancient past will again reign over the nations and be identified as “Mystery, Babylon the Great, the Mother of harlots and of the Abominations of the Earth.” [End of quote]
The central, false deity of Pergamos was the sun-divinity worshipped under the form of Asklepios Soter, which means “the man-instructing serpent and savior.”
We see Satan taking on the form of the serpent in the Garden of Eden. This man-instructing serpent converses with our great-grandmother in Genesis 3:1-6.
Satan’s instruction concerning the deadly forbidden tree, the tree of the knowledge of good and evil, was to go ahead and eat, and that they would not die, but would be as gods, knowing good and evil. Note that he promises them that they would be like gods, which is Satan’s desire: “I will be like the most High.”
Revelation 12:9 reads:
And the great dragon was cast out, that old serpent, called the Devil, and Satan, which deceiveth the whole world: he was cast out into the earth, and his angels were cast out with him.
The Satan serpent is everywhere, especially dominant in anti-Christian societies. Quotes from various sources follow.
Source: Wikipedia.org, “Snake Worship:”
Over a large part of India, there are carved representations of cobras or nagas, or stones as substitutes. To these, human food and flowers are offered and lights are burned before the shrines. Among some South Indian, a cobra which is accidentally killed is burned like a human being; no one would kill one intentionally. The serpent-god’s image is carried in an annual procession by a celibate priestess. [End of quote]
Source: English.ohmynews.com, “Hindus worship Snake God on July 30:”
On “Naag Puja” (Snake Worship Day), also known as “Naag Panchami,” on July 30, doors of many houses are decorated by a poster of Naag, the snake god.
Today, the poster of Naag is worshipped with vermilion powder, flower, sacred grass (dubo) and pasted in the door with cow dung, not by glue. Cow dung is considered as pure, unlike paste. The poster is then splashed with cow’s milk because milk is the food of snakes.
In the crown of Buddha, we can see the design of Naag. This evidence shows that Naag is worshipped as God.
On this day, all Hindus clean their house and splash cow urine (holy water) all around the house. Then, the poster of Naag is pasted first at the top of the main door, and the other doors of the room also. [End of quote]
The ensign, the logo, of the serpent is ubiquitous. In the book Snakes: a Natural History, you’ll find the following written by Patricia Fourcade under the heading “Mythology:”
As man observed snakes’ morphological and biological peculiarities, he attributed to them a supernatural character. Moving quickly without limbs, found on the ground, in trees, and in water, appearing suddenly out of underground hiding places, fixing the world with its ever-open eyes, swallowing its prey in one piece, able to inflict venomous bites, and occasionally changing skin, the snake appears quite different from other animals and from man. There has been a tendency to classify snakes among the strange and supernatural in societies around the world; everywhere, in fact, where snakes are part of the local fauna. They have been seen either as demons, monsters, gods, ancestors, or sacred protectors, according to the civilization in question. Through the mythologies of various societies, or even within those of a single one, one discovers that there is an ambiguity and plurality of the snake’s image, which represents opposite values, or serves as a link between them. Some themes recur frequently: good/evil, knowledge/lie, health/sickness, fertility, immortality, eternity/death, man/woman, earth/water, earth/sky, etc.
Also under the “Mythology” heading, you’ll find the following penned by Daniel Heuclin:
The common cobra (naja naja) owes its nickname as “the spectacled cobra” to the characteristic design on its neck. An Indian legend says that one day, Buddha fell asleep in the sun while traveling in the desert. He was surprised to awaken in the shade…of a cobra, which shielded him from the sun’s harsh rays with its open hood.
The story says that to thank it, Buddha blessed the animal by putting his two fingers on its neck.
Since then, these snakes have carried the mark of divine gratitude. [End of quotes]
The following paragraphs are from the GodSaidManSaid feature, “The Saga of the Serpent—Part Three:”
To those who challenge the inerrancy and literalness of the Holy Bible, we offer the serpent that is hidden in plain view. If the ensign of the Devil is the old serpent, that great dragon, and if Satan is the god – little g-o-d – of this world, as the Word of God declares, then we should see his imprimatur everywhere, and we do. We see his ensign at the head of the world’s anti-Christ organizations and people.
The Word of God declares that the Satan serpent, that great dragon, wants to be like God. Isaiah 14:12-14:
12 How art thou fallen from heaven, O Lucifer, son of the morning! how art thou cut down to the ground, which didst weaken the nations!
13 For thou hast said in thine heart, I will ascend into heaven, I will exalt my throne above the stars of God: I will sit also upon the mount of the congregation, in the sides of the north:
14 I will ascend above the heights of the clouds; I will be like the most High.
Satan wants to be like God. In the Garden of Eden, he offers Eve his leadership versus God’s – another way – and Eve chooses the Devil. Intricately interwoven into all of society is Satan’s other way. John 14:6:
Jesus saith unto him, I am the way, the truth, and the life: no man cometh unto the Father, but by me.
Satan faithfully offers another way, and the sons of Adam make choices.
God calls Satan “the great dragon,” “the old serpent.” In the Bible, creatures such as are commonly known as dinosaurs were, in times of old, called dragons, leviathan, behemoth, fiery flying serpents, cockatrice, and other such names. Prior to the 1840s, the word dinosaur, which means terrible lizard, was not yet coined. The dragon and the dinosaur are one and the same.
Satan, “the great dragon,” “the old serpent,” is everywhere:
The intricacies of Satan’s spider’s web, by which the souls of men are snared, are beyond impressive; yet most of the time, his deceptions are hidden in plain view. Let’s take a more in-depth look at one colossal Satanic snare that’s hidden in plain view.
When one arrives at the house of faith, he or she is greeted by the Word of God and His Christ. When one arrives at the cathedrals (museums) of the anti-Bible people, he or she is greeted by a dinosaur, a dragon – their Goliath – a symbol of their organized rebellion against the credibility of God and His Bible. Should it then be any surprise to you that Satan – the enemy of the cross of Christ – is known as the old serpent and great dragon?
Revelation 20:1-3
1 And I saw an angel come down from heaven, having the key of the bottomless pit and a great chain in his hand.
2 And he laid hold on the dragon, that old serpent, which is the Devil, and Satan, and bound him a thousand years,
3 And cast him into the bottomless pit, and shut him up, and set a seal upon him, that he should deceive the nations no more, till the thousand years should be fulfilled: and after than he must be loosed a little season.
At our houses of worship, we meet Jesus Christ and the God of the Bible. At academia’s houses of worship – their universities and museums – they meet the dragon, Tyrannosaurus Rex, and his companions.
The great dragon, the old serpent, is everywhere. [End of quote]
Again from “The Saga of the Serpent—Part Two:”
Source: Gty.org, “Pergamos: The Church of Satan’s Throne:”
In the city of Pergamos was a medical school. And this was a famous place of medicine. Mingled into their medicine, of course, was a lot of superstition. And the emblem or the idol of Asklepios was a snake. If you have ever seen the medical symbol, you will notice that, in the middle of a medical symbol, winding down its way around the pole, is a snake – that is the ancient god Asklepios, the god of healing. When you went to the temple of Asklepios, you went there to be healed. In the temple, harmless snakes slithered all over the temple floor. And, in order to be healed, you had to go in there and lie down and stay there. You slept on the temple floor, and while you slept, the defused multiplicity of the deity of Asklepios crawled over your body, and infused you with his healing power. Satanic? Yes. Right from the old serpent himself. [End of quote]
Source: Truthmagazine.com, “Asklepios: The Greek God:”
Pergamos was the center of the worship of Asklepios, or as the Romans called him, Aesculapius. The Egyptians deified an historical physician, Imhotep, exactly as the Greeks deified the historical Asklepios, i.e. Aesculapius. In 420 B.C., the worship of Asklepios was introduced at Athens, coupled with that of Hygieia (in Greek mythology, the goddess of health). Asklepios was the name of the Greek god of medicine, the son of Apollo and the nymph Coronis.
The practice of sleeping in these sanctuaries was very common. The emblem of Asklepios is the serpent. The serpent was intimately connected with one of the ways in which cures were effected in the Asklepeion. Sufferers were allowed to spend the night in the darkness of the temple. In the temple , there were temple snakes. In the night, the sufferer might be touched by one of these tame and harmless snakes as they glided over the ground on which he lay. The touch of the snake was held to be the touch of the god himself, and the touch was held to bring health and healing. It was supposed that this Greek god Asklepios effected cures or prescribed remedies to the sick in dreams. There was a temple of Asklepios at Athens, as there was at Pergamos.
Is there anything in the worship of Asklepios which might account for the fact that John said Pergamos was the place where Satan’s seat was (Rev. 2:13)? There are two possibilities. The characterization of Asklepios was “Asklepios Soter,”“Asklepios the Savior.” Savior is the word which in the belief of any Christian belongs uniquely and exclusively to Jesus Christ. It might well be that the Christians felt that the application of this title to a heathen god was indeed a Satanic perversion of the truth. There was something even more suggestive than that about the worship of Asklepios. Since the emblem of Asklepios was the serpent, many Jews and many Christians with knowledge of the Old Testament believed the serpent was nothing less than the emblem of Satan himself. The serpent was bound to carry the thoughts of these individuals back to the old story of man’s first sin in the Garden of Eden (Gen. 3). Therefore, this might well be why John regarded Pergamos as “Satan’s seat.” Pergamos had the temple of a god whose emblem was the serpent, an in that temple, snakes crawled about and were regarded as incarnations of the god himself. [End of quotes]
Finally, from Snakes: A Natural History:
The docility of some snakes and the sacred character that has been attributed to them has also made them the guardians of peace, deities, and the people.
According to a story found in both Greek and Roman mythology, Hermes (or Mercury), the god of travelers and commerce, found two sparring snakes. He separated them with a stick, around which the reconciled reptiles coiled themselves. A symbol of peace, which later became the caduceus, and then the emblem of the medical profession, was thus created.
In India, Mucilinga, the mythical king of the Nagas—deities which can show themselves in both human and snake form—protected the Buddha from a storm with his hood. Pythons venerated by the Mossi, from Burkina-Fasso, are village guardians.
The Egyptian asp goddess Ejo protected the delta of the Nile and guaranteed the sovereignty and divinity of the pharaohs, on whose crown she appeared as the raised and vigilant asp, or uraeus.
Many legends have the snake not just as the keeper but as the transmitter of knowledge.
The snake is also associated with medicine and its gods in many civilizations: It’s thus the guardian of healing knowledge.
The snake/health association already existed in Mesopotamia, where Ningishzida, the medicine god, holds a stick around which is the dual-sexed and double-headed snake Sachan. There are very similar representations in Greek and Roman civilizations. The Greeks’ and Romans’ god of medicine (Asklepios or Aesculapius) often appears as a snake. In his anthropomorphic representation, he carries a stick with a coiled snake around it; the snake was sent by Apollo to teach him the value of medicinal plants. This snake is now identified as Elaphe longissima.
According to a Navajo myth, the snake people lived in an underground hell, near a lake. One of these snake-men kidnapped a young woman, and when she returned to her tribe two years later, she had the power to heal.
The Indian Nagas, snake divinities, can also transmit medical knowledge and increase humans’ cognitive faculties by granting them extraordinary sight and hearing.
The snake is often thought to know secrets that can change men’s lives.
In Genesis, the tempter snake is the guardian of the tree of knowledge. In Slavic, Germanic, and Scandinavian traditions, the snake or dragon is the mythical creature that informs men of the present and future. [End of quote]
It is the M.O. (modus operandi) of the fallen. They must seek another way, and the ensign of their delusion is the old serpent, the great dragon—and we see him everywhere. For those looking for God-inspired truths, we recommend Genesis, the first book of the Bible for starters. Be of good cheer, child of God, your Father’s Word is true and righteous altogether—miracles and all. This is the place to build a life that will last forever.
GOD SAID, Genesis 3:1-6:
