Why We Believe (Are You Surprised?) -- Part 4
GodSaidManSaid pretty much answers all the world’s questions. That might seem far-fetched, but when you consider the real questions are not that many, but rather simply exist in various languages, the claim doesn’t seem so boastful.
The three basic questions are:
1. Where did I come from?
2. Why am I here?
3. Where am I going when I die?
There is a Book, a single Book of mysteries, on whose pages all the revelations of life are held; a Book that requires a Spiritual tutor to unlock. Even though this Book exists in printer’s ink and paper, under the quickening power of God’s Holy Ghost tutor, it comes alive. This Book is a person. Revelation 19:13 speaks of Jesus Christ and reads, “…and His name is called The Word of God.” John 1:14:
And the Word was made flesh, and dwelt among us, (and we beheld his glory, the glory as of the only begotten of the Father,) full of grace and truth.
There is a Book upon the earth to which all books ever written, or ever to be written, must bow the ear. Revelation 1:8 says of the Lord, “I am the Alpha and Omega,” which is the first and last letters of the Greek alphabet, and representing all letters in between along with the words they form—and to this Alpha and Omega, every ear and knee must bow.
This living Book readily answers the three questions that have so perplexed the self-proclaimed wisest amongst us, and imagine: the answers to each pivots around God’s singularity, Jesus Christ. Watch this:
1. Where did I come from? All of creation is of the Father and by the Son. Jesus Christ created all things, including you and me, by the Word of His Father.
Hebrews 1:1-2:
1 God, who at sundry times and in divers manners spake in time past unto the fathers by the prophets,
2 Hath in these last days spoken unto us by his Son, whom he hath appointed heir of all things, by whom also he made the worlds;
Colossians 1:16-17:
16 For by him were all things created, that are in heaven, and that are in earth, visible and invisible, whether they be thrones, or dominions, or principalities, or powers: all things were created by him, and for him:
17 And he is before all things, and by him all things consist.
We were made in the very image and likeness of God (Genesis 1:26).
2. Why am I here? To walk in faith and uprightness, to harmonize with and enjoy God’s blessings, and to accomplish His individual purpose in my life. The ability to fulfil this second question begins at BORN AGAIN. John 3:3:
Jesus answered and said unto him, Verily, verily, I say unto thee, Except a man be born again, he cannot see the kingdom of God.
3. Where am I going when I die? It’s summed up in the great commission written in Mark 16:15-16:
15 And he said unto them, Go ye into all the world, and preach the gospel to every creature.
16 He that believeth and is baptized shall be saved; but he that believeth not shall be damned.
The BORN AGAIN live forever with the Father, the Son, and the Holy Ghost, along with all the host of heaven, in Paradise. John 11:26:
And whosoever liveth and believeth in me shall never die. Believest thou this?
Dear visitor, have you yet to be BORN AGAIN—born a very real second time, this time of the Spirit of God? In just a few moments, you will be offered a simple prompt that will change everything if you follow from your heart—and I do mean everything. This “everything” begins with a new Father and a new birth certificate recorded in the Lamb’s Book of Life.
Today…all your sin and shame will be washed away by Christ’s cleansing blood. You will be pristine, Holy Ghost clean. Today…all of Satan’s bondages in your life will be broken. The chains are gone. Today…your questions are answered. Here is the prompt I promised: Click onto Further with Jesus for childlike instructions and immediate entry into the Kingdom of God. NOW FOR TODAY’S SUBJECT.
GOD SAID, Romans 8:14-16:
14 For as many as are led by the Spirit of God, they are the sons of God.
15 For ye have not received the spirit of bondage again to fear; but ye have received the Spirit of adoption, whereby we cry, Abba, Father.
16 The Spirit itself beareth witness with our spirit, that we are the children of God:
GOD SAID, Romans 14:10-11:
10 But why dost thou judge thy brother? or why dost thou set at nought thy brother? for we shall all stand before the judgment seat of Christ.
11 For it is written, As I live, saith the Lord, every knee shall bow to me, and every tongue shall confess to God.
GOD SAID, Matthew 27:22-25:
22 Pilate saith unto them, What shall I do then with Jesus which is called Christ? They all say unto him, Let him be crucified.
23 And the governor said, Why, what evil hath he done? But they cried out the more, saying, Let him be crucified.
24 When Pilate saw that he could prevail nothing, but that rather a tumult was made, he took water, and washed his hands before the multitude, saying, I am innocent of the blood of this just person: see ye to it.
25 Then answered all the people, and said, His blood be on us, and on our children.
MAN SAID: Everyone knows the Christian Bible is not an accurate history of anything. And this “Jesus Christ?” …PROVE IT!!
Now THE RECORD: Welcome to GodSaidManSaid feature 1296 that will once again contend for the faith. All of these faith-building features are archived here in text and streaming audio for your edification and to facilitate your own personal evangelizing efforts. Every Thursday eve, God willing, they grow by one.
Thank you for visiting. May God’s face shine upon you with Light and Truth.
All of these “Why We Believe” features begin with the following introduction:
The redeemed know the Word of God is true and righteous altogether, not because of third-party certifications—NO! The BORN AGAIN know that the Word of God is true, not because of our great, natural analytic skills—NO! The children of God know the Word of God is true, every jot and every tittle, by a certifying standard that sits high above all this world’s academic cogitations. The very truth of our salvation is established in heavenly places and is not of this world, and it is certainly not subject to it’s so very temporary foolishness.
Romans 8:14-16:
14 For as many as are led by the Spirit of God, they are the sons of God.
15 For ye have not received the spirit of bondage again to fear; but ye have received the Spirit of adoption, whereby we cry, Abba, Father.
16 The Spirit itself beareth witness with our spirit, that we are the children of God:
I Corinthians 1:18:
For the preaching of the cross is to them that perish foolishness; but unto us which are saved it is the power of God.
I believe Adam and Eve existed because the Bible said so, not because microbiology knocked the evolutionists on their aggregate ears when they discovered—YES, all of the world’s present population is the product of one common mother and one common father. Science knows these common parents as mtDNA Eve and Y-Chromosome Adam. I believe in Noah’s Ark and the global flood because the Bible said so, not because there are fish fossils on every mountain peak. The children of God believe the Bible to be true and righteous altogether, not because of third-party attestation but because the Bible is certified TRUE by the Spirit of Truth in Christ Jesus that resides in heavenly places and in the redeemed.
In Dr. Guillen’s book, Believing is Seeing, the following childlike but prescient statement is given:
The late Swiss-American logician Verena Huber-Dyson put it this way: “There is more to truth than can be caught by proof.” I prefer simply saying, truth is bigger than proof. [End of quote]
Our truth reigns supreme over the clamor for proof, but it is exciting to watch the academics confirm the beautiful Book, even if inadvertently.
The structure and style of the GodSaidManSaid original proof series, which was first produced about half a century ago, was delivered in Holy Ghost soundbites. A great decimator of unbelief is a series on GodSaidManSaid titled “Undeniable Proof—Every Jot and Every Tittle” and it houses 400 just such Holy Ghost soundbites.
GodSaidManSaid is built on four proof platforms that establish beyond any reasonable doubt that God IS and that He is a rewarder of those who diligently seek Him. Hebrews 11:6:
But without faith it is impossible to please him: for he that cometh to God must believe that he is, and that he is a rewarder of them that diligently seek him.
Proof platform number one is Archaeology. In the Archaeology category, you’ll also find ancient history and societal records, geology, and various other scientific disciplines. This proof category clearly certifies the majority-text Holy Bible as a supernaturally accurate and inerrant history book—all miracles included.
Proof platform number two is Prophecy. In this category, it is established that God’s beautiful Book was penned by holy men but authored by God, who knows the end from the beginning. Here, the laws of probability are engaged. For example:
⦁ A prophetic statement in the Word of God actually comes to pass.
⦁ The prophecy and its probabilities and contingencies are considered, and we compute the odds of man making the prophetic statement and seeing it come to pass.
⦁ In an example, the odds of a mere man making these predictions and seeing them come to pass is one chance in five billion. The logical conclusion, then, would be that the odds are 4,999,999,999 out of 5,000,000,000 that the prophetic statement was God.
Proof platform number three is GodSaidManSaid the Record. This website draws its name from this category. On this platform, God’s Word is cited on a particular subject, and man’s contradiction to it noted. The results of man’s disregard is then recorded.
Inherent within every commandment and precept of God is a blessing or a curse. Because God’s Word is true and righteous altogether, obeying the commandments and precepts yields the bountiful fruit of doing the right thing. Because God’s Word is true and righteous altogether, disobeying yields the deadly fruit of doing the wrong thing. It’s just that simple.
Galatians 6:7:
Be not deceived; God is not mocked: for whatsoever a man soweth, that shall he also reap.
Proof platform number four is the Historicity of Jesus Christ. If only they could find a body, but alas…no success. You’ll find certifying third-party attestation from history, geology, and beyond. YES! to His prophetic and miraculous virgin birth and the 23 missing Adamic chromosomes. YES! to His ministry, to the miracles, to His crucifixion, resurrection, and ascension into heaven. YES! to His soon return a second time, and YES! to His empty tomb.
Our truth reigns supreme over the clamor for proof, but it is exciting to watch the academics confirm the beautiful Book.
Proof platform number 4 is the Historicity of Jesus Christ. Was there a Jesus Christ? Does history endorse the Bible’s account of the Lord of Glory? The answer, of course, is a resounding "YES!" Cornelius Tacitus, who was born in 55 A.D. and died in 120 A.D., was called the "greatest historian" of ancient Rome. He was born approximately 20 years after Christ’s crucifixion. Tacitus wrote concerning the reign of the Roman emperor Nero, and recorded the following:
But not all the relief could come from man, not all the bounties that the prince could bestow, nor all the atonements which could be presented to the gods, availed to relieve Nero from the infamy of being believed to have ordered the conflagration, the fire of Rome. Hence to suppress the rumor, he falsely charged with the guilt, and punished with the most exquisite tortures, the persons commonly called Christians, who were hated for their enormities. Christus (Christ), the founder of the name, was put to death by Pontius Pilate, procurator of Judea in the reign of Tiberias: but the pernicious superstition, repressed for a time, broke out again, not only through Judea, where the mischief originated, but through the city of Rome also.
That’s a quote from Cornelius Tacitus. Later on we’ll see what enormities the early believers were accused of.
The following excerpt is from Josh McDowell’s book, The New Evidence That Demands A Verdict. It reads:
Cambridge lecturer Markus Bockmuehl notes that Tacitus’s comments provide us with testimony by the leading Roman historian of his day, "independent confirmation that Jesus lived and was formally executed in Judaea in the reign of Tiberias and during Pontius Pilate’s office as procurator (technically still a prefect, A.D. 26-36). That may not seem like much, but it is actually surprisingly useful in discounting two different theories which are still sometimes advanced: first, that Jesus of Nazareth never existed; and secondly, that he did not die by the duly-administered Roman death penalty." [End of quote]
Again Tacitus, who was also the governor of Asia, wrote the following in his historic account entitled The Annals of Imperial Rome:
To suppress therefore the common rumor, Nero procured others to be accused, and inflicted exquisite punishments upon those people, who were in abhorrence for their crimes, and were commonly known as Christians. They had their denomination from Christus (Christ), who in the reign of Tiberias was put to death as a criminal by the procurator Pontius Pilate. This pernicious superstition, though checked for a while, broke out again, and spread, not only over Judea, the source of this evil, but reached the city (Rome) also.
Roman historian Suetonius, who was a court official under Hadrian, and annalist of the Imperial House, stated in his historic record, Life of Claudius, the following:
As the Jews were making constant disturbances at the instigation of Chrestus (another spelling for Christ), he (Claudius) expelled them from Rome.
This event took place in 49 A.D., not long after the crucifixion of the Lord Jesus.
Again, Suetonius chronicled the firing of Rome under Nero in 64 A.D. and recorded the following: "Punishment by Nero was inflicted on the Christians, a class of men given to a new and mischievous superstition."
As we continue, you’ll discover what “mischievous superstition” caused the death of the Christians. You will be surprised. Listen to this account by Pliniun Secondus, also known as Pliny the Younger. It was written in 112 A.D. He was writing to the emperor of Bythynia seeking counsel on how to treat the Christians. He explained that he had been killing both men and women, boys and girls—there were so many being put to death that he wondered whether he should continue killing allthose who were discovered to be Christians, or if he should kill only certainones. He explained that he had made the Christians bow down to the statues of Trajan. He went on to write that he also made them curse Christ, which a genuine Christian cannot be induced to do. And in the same letter, he writes concerning the Christians who were being tried in the courts:
The whole of their guilt, or their error, was that they were in the habit of meeting on a certain fixed day as to a god and bound themselves to a solemn oath: not to do any wicked deeds, never to commit any fraud, theft, adultery, never to falsify their word, nor to deny a trust when they be called upon to deliver it up.
So, Pliny the Younger wrote that in those days Christians were being martyred because they refused to do evil.
Julian, the Roman emperor, an ancient enemy of the Cross of Christ, wrote the following:
Jesus...has now been celebrated about three hundred years; having done nothing in his lifetime worthy of fame, unless anyone thinks it a very great work to heal lame and blind people and exorcise demoniacs in the villages of Bethsaida and Bethany.
So you see that Julian, the Roman emperor, ascribes to Christ the power to perform miracles. Again from Josh McDowell:
In the Babylonian Talmud we read: "It has been taught: On the eve of Passover they hanged Yeshu. And an announcer went out, in front of him, for forty days (saying): ‘He is going to be stoned, because he practiced sorcery and enticed and led Israel astray. Anyone who knows anything in his favor, let him come and plead in his behalf.’ But, not having found anything is his favor, they hanged him on the eve of Passover." Another version of this text says, "Yeshu the Nazarene."
"Yeshu" translates through Greek to English as "Jesus," and the reference to him being a Nazarene makes the link to Jesus Christ even stronger.
Moreover, the word "hanged" is another way of referring to crucifixion. "The Talmud," writes the Jewish scholar Joseph Klausner, "speaks of hanging in place of crucifixion, since this horrible Roman form of death was only known to Jewish scholars from Roman trials, and not from the Jewish legal system. Even Paul the Apostle expounds this passage ’for a curse of God is that which is hanged’ as applicable to Jesus."
Also, the reference that this crucifixion occurred "on the eve of Passover" agrees with John 19:14.
Therefore, this text clearly affirms the historicity of Jesus and His death. It also affirms that the Jewish authorities were involved in the sentencing, but it tries to justify their actions. In a backhanded way, it even attests to Jesus’ miracles, but it attempts to explain them away as the work of a sorcerer or magician, a response mentioned by Gospel writers. [End of quote]
Unfortunately for the Christ deniers there is a plethora of historic fact that shouts a resounding "YES!" to the Biblical record of this Jesus. New research published in the October 2010 issue of Acts & Facts is another addition to the overwhelming empirical evidence stacked up against the enemies of the cross of Christ. The feature was written by renowned geologist Dr. Steven Austin, under the title of "Greatest Earthquakes of the Bible." Several paragraphs follow:
Recently, geologists have investigated the 4,000-year chronology of earthquake disturbances within the uppermost 19 feet of laminated sediment of the Dead Sea. Hypersaline waters preserve seasonally laminated sediment because organisms cannot live or burrow in the bed of the lake. As a result, only a nearby earthquake (or very large distant earthquake) can homogenize the lake’s uppermost sediment layers, producing a "mixed layer" devoid of laminations.
The following excerpts are found under the headings of "Qumran Earthquake of 31 B.C." and "The Crucifixion in Jerusalem, April 3, 33 A.D.:"
After three hours of darkness at midday on April 3, 33 A.D., the Lord Jesus exclaimed the words "It is finished!" as He died on the cross. Immediately, the curtain of the sanctuary of the temple was torn, a great earthquake occurred, rocks were broken, and many dead saints were resurrected from their tombs (Matthew 27:51-54). The earthquake upon the death of Christ called attention to the great salvation that had been accomplished that day on the cross.
An outcrop of laminated Dead Sea sediment can be seen at Wadi Ze’elim above the southwestern shore of the modern Dead Sea near the fortress of Masada. In this sediment outcrop is a distinctive one-foot thick "mixed layer" of sediment that is tied strongly to the Qumran earthquake’s onshore ground ruptures of 31 B.C. (see Figure 2). Thirteen inches above the 31 B.C. event bed is another distinctive "mixed layer" less than one inch thick. The sedimentation rate puts this second earthquake about 65 years after the 31 B.C. earthquake. It seems that the crucifixion earthquake of 33 A.D. was magnitude 5.5, leaving direct physical evidence in a thin layer of disturbed sediment from the Dead Sea. [End of quote]
For more amazing information concerning the earthquake that occurred immediately after the Lord had given up the ghost, click onto the GodSaidManSaid feature, "The Day Jesus Died."
The famous Jewish historian Josephus, who was born in 37 AD, not long after the death of Jesus, wrote concerning Jesus’ life. In one of his books, Antiquities of the Jews, the following passage is found:
Now there was about this time Jesus, a wise man, if it be lawful to call him a man, for he was a doer of wonderful works, a teacher of such men as receive the truth with pleasure. He drew over to him both many of the Jews, and many of the Gentiles. He was [the] Christ, and when Pilate, at the suggestion of the principal men among us, had condemned him to the cross, those that loved him at the first did not forsake him: for he appeared to them alive again the third day; as the divine prophets had foretold these and ten thousand other wonderful things concerning him. And the tribe of Christians so named from him are not extinct at this day. [End of quote]
The above passage has been hotly contested by the Jews and other liberal scholars. Author Grant Jeffrey, who wrote the book, Jesus: The Great Debate, weighed in on this subject with the following statement:
For three centuries, a great debate has raged among biblical scholars regarding the authenticity of the text of Josephus about Jesus of Nazareth. Many liberal scholars believe that this reference to Jesus Christ, to his brother James, and John the Baptist must be interpolations or forgeries by Christian editors in later centuries. In other words, they have concluded that Josephus’ reference to Jesus could not possibly be genuine. However, such an assertion of forgery requires significant proof. If scholars had found dozens of ancient copies of Jesephus’ book that failed to contain this passage, they would have some evidence that this material was not an original passage written by the Jewish historian. Yet none of these scholars can produce a single ancient copy of Josephus’s Antiquities of the Jews that does not contain this disputed passage on Jesus. In his book History of the Christian Church, Phillip Schaff noted that all ancient copies of Josephus’ book, including the early Slavonic [Russian] and Arabic language versions, contain the disputed passage about the life of Christ. No one has ever explained how a Christian editor could have altered each of these widely distributed versions during the centuries following their publication. How could someone introduce a new paragraph in the middle of a complete text? Why wouldn’t someone have detected this addition to the popular history? [End of quote]
The following paragraph is from Evidence That Demands A Verdict:
Attempts have been made to show that Josephus could not have written this. However, “this passage,” writes Michael Green in Man Alive, “was in the text of Josephus used by Eusebius in the fourth century.” Also, it is reiterated by the most recent Loeb edition of his works. And it is all the more remarkable when we remember that, so far from being sympathetic to Christians, Josephus was a Jew writing to please the Romans. This story would not have pleased them in the slightest. He would hardly have included it if it were not true.” [End of quote]
Morris and Morris, in their book, Many Infallible Proofs, published the following information concerning the death and resurrection of the mighty Jesus Christ:
No wonder then, in view of the combined evidence of the empty tomb, the numerous appearances, the change in the disciples, and the authenticity of the records, not to mention the testimony of two thousand years of Christian history, that such a man as Thomas Arnold, formerly professor of history at Rugby and Oxford, one of the world’s great historians, could say:
…I know of no one fact in the history of mankind which is proved by better and fuller evidence of every sort, to the understanding of a fair inquirer, than the great sign which God hath given us that Christ died, and rose again from the dead.
In like manner, Simon Greenleaf, one of the most skilled legal minds ever produced in the United States, a top authority on the matter of what constitutes sound evidence, and developer of the Harvard Law School, after a thorough evaluation of the four Gospel accounts from the point of view of their validity as objective testimonial evidence, concluded:
It was therefore impossible that they could have persisted in affirming the truths they have narrated, had not Jesus actually risen from the dead, and had they not known this fact as certainly as they knew any other fact. [End of quote]
The trail of credible history that certifies the reality of the person Jesus Christ is monumental. The trail of history that certifies the virgin birth, the ministry of Christ, the miracles, the crucifixion, the resurrection and more, is abundant. F. F. Bruce, Rylands, Professor of Biblical Criticism and Exegesis at the University of Manchester, said the following: "Some writers may toy with the fancy of a ‘Christ-myth,’ but they do not do so on the ground of historical evidence. The historicity of Christ is as axiomatic for an unbiased historian as the historicity of Julius Caesar. It is not historians who propagate the ‘Christ-myth’ theories."
Otto Betz, author of What Do We Know About Jesus, said, "No serious scholar has ventured to postulate the non-historicity of Jesus." [End of quote]
The Christ-deniers discount His very existence, though some “only” doubt the Bible’s description of Him, entirely rejecting the New Testament as an accurate, historic document.
The following paragraphs are from the GodSaidManSaid feature, “The Man Who Crucified Christ: An Investigation:"
1961 was a bad year for the deniers, and their fortunes have not improved in the 60+ years since. Scholar Lawrence J Mykytiuk spends considerable time identifying people included in the Biblical narrative using ancient inscriptions and histories. His work is quoted in the following excerpt found on Deseret.com:
Mykytiuk finds decisive documentation, primarily in the writings of the historian Flavius Josephus and in ancient minted coins, for the existence of not only of Herod the Great but of his sons Herod Archelaus, Herod Antipas, Herod Philip, and Philip the Tetrarch; his grandson Herod Agrippa I; his granddaughter Herodias; her daughter, Salome (named in Josephus, though not in the New Testament, where her infamous dance leads to the execution of John the Baptist); his great-grandson Herod Agrippa II, who, with Festus, listened to the apostle Paul’s defense as described in Acts 25:13-26:32; his great-granddaughter Bernice or Berenice, the sister and perhaps the lover of Herod Agrippa II, who also attended Paul’s defense; and his granddaughter Drusilla, who eventually married the Roman governor Felix.
Perhaps more significantly than the previous characters, though, Mykytiuk finds convincing extra-biblical evidence for five Roman legates and governors. Among them are Marcus Antonius Felix and Porcius Festus, already mentioned above, who are described in Josephus and attested by coinage. Publius Sulpicius Quirinius, or Cyrenius, appears in Luke 2:2 and the writings of Josephus, but also turns up in the ancient stone “Lapis Venetus” inscription, written in Latin, that (appropriately enough) describes his ordering of a census for the Syrian city of Apamea.
Lucius Junius Gallio, the proconsul of Achaia who sat as judge of the accusations against the apostle Paul (see Acts 18:12-17), is confirmed by an inscription found in Greece, at Delphi, in the late 19th century. [End of quote]
Pontius Pilate? Is the Bible accurate?
The Christ-deniers denied Pontius Pilate was a real, historic figure. In 1961, the “Pilate Stone,” a dedicatory stone from the theatre at Caeserea Maritima, located on Israel’s northern coast, was unearthed. Again from the feature, “The Man Who Crucified Christ: An Investigation:”
The March 14, 2022 headline on CBN.com announced: “Discovery on Jerusalem Pilgrimage Road Proves it was Built by the Man who Crucified Jesus.” Excerpts follow:
The Roman governor who was responsible for condemning Jesus of Nazareth to death by crucifixion also ordered the construction of a street for pilgrims to enter to follow to the Jewish Temple more than 2,000 years ago.
National Geographic reports that historians previously thought it was the Roman-appointed King Herod the Great who approved most of the large construction projects that remade ancient Jerusalem into a major pilgrimage and tourist center. But a recent analysis of more than 100 coins found beneath the stepped street point to the start and completion of the effort under Pontius Pilate, who ruled for about a decade starting in AD 26 or 27.
Coins discovered in the past few years beneath the paving stones date to around AD 31. The most common Jerusalem coins from the first century were minted after 40, “so not having them beneath the street means the street was built before their appearance, in other words, only in the time of Pilate,” Donald Ariel, a coin expert with the Israel Antiquities Authority, told the magazine.
The road took 10 years for the Romans to build. When it was completed, it ran more than a third of a mile long and measured 26 feet wide. More than 10,000 tons of limestone were used in its construction. [End of quote]
The critics continue to criticize, yet have only failure and will continue to have only failure to show for their demented efforts to dethrone the Christ of Glory. They display such strident and unlearned foolishness.
Be of good cheer, saints! Our Truth sits in heavenly places, high and lifted up above all the world’s cogitations. Our Truth reigns supreme over the proof the deniers claim to seek, but it is exciting to watch the academics confirm the beautiful Book. Yes, even when it’s mostly inadvertently. God’s Word is true and righteous altogether…a place to build a life that will last forever.
